Rhincodon Consulting – the story behind the name.
November 30, 2016
Rhincodon is the genus name for the whale shark, Rhincodon typus. I had the pleasure of swimming with a majestic individual on the West Coast of Australia, at Ningaloo Reef, and it was absolutely an unforgettable life changing experience.
I named my company after the whale shark because I couldn’t think of a better mascot to represent Environment, Health, and Safety. The whaleshark is a pelagic filter feeder, with a long life span and maturation, and is considered an endangered species. As such, the presence of whale sharks is an indicator of environmental health. When I snorkeled with them, the tour I was on followed strict protocols to ensure the animals were not touched or bothered, that the boats kept far away, and that the persons snorkelling were properly outfitted with the right equipment and had swimming skills. The whale shark is otherwise incredible safe to be in the water with, and so what a fantastic example of a Safe Activity. Lastly, after encountering the whale shark, I felt an extreme sense of wellness and serenity. Many believe that health and wellness are intertwined, and so the feeling of euphoria that I felt certainly contributed to a healthy outlook.
Finally the pattern on the back of the whalesharks are unique to each individual. As a systems thinker, I’m constantly ‘connecting the dots’ to make the most of relationships between processes. I did my Masters on the Applicability of using Safety Management Theory within an Environmental Management Framework. I’m always looking for connections within Sustainability and Business systems to make efficient and effective use of data and feedback loops. I can’t imagine a better mascot to represent my mission in this endeavour.
